Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disease caused by a mutation in the gene that produces dystrophin.

Dystrophin is a protein that enables the strength and mobility of every muscle. Due to a mutation in the gene, the boys do not produce dystrophin and their muscles deteriorate every day.

Only boys get DMD. The dystrophin gene is linked to the X chromosome and in most cases the mother is not aware that she is the carrier of the gene, and the gene can mutate spontaneously.

They are born as healthy children, intellectually preserved and aware of their condition.

The first symptoms are observed between 3-5 years of age (it is difficult to get up from the floor, they get tired quickly, they often fall).

The next stage of progression is between the ages of 10-13, where due to accelerated muscle deterioration, the first function they lose is walking.

Further progression of the disease from year to year affects the weakness of all muscles, including the diaphragm, lungs and heart.

Due to the complications that arise, young men lose their life’s struggle at an early age.

Some don’t even live to see their 20th birthday.

Dišenova mišićna distrofija (DMD) je genetsko oboljenje uzrokovano mutacijom u genu koji proizvodi distrofin.

Distrofin je protein koji omogućuje snagu i pokretljivost svakog mišića. Zbog mutacije u genu kod dečaka ne dolazi do proizvodnje distrofina i njihovi mišići svakog dana propadaju.

Od DMD-a oboljevaju samo dečaci. Gen zadistrofin je vezan za  X hromozom i u većini slučajeva majka nije svesna da je nosilac gena, a gen može mutirati spontano.

Rađaju se kao zdrava deca, intelktualno očuvani svesni svog stanja.

Prvi simptomi se primećuju između 3-5 godine (otežano ustaju sa poda, brzo se zamaraju, često padaju).

Sledeća faza progresije je između 10-13 godine,gde zbog ubrzanog propadanja mišića prva funkcija koju izgube je hod.

Dalja progresija bolesti iz godine u godinu zahvata slabost svih mišića,uključujući dijafragmu, pluća i srce.

Zbog komplikacija koje nastaju mladići gube životnu borbu u ranoj mladosti.

Neki ne dožive ni svoj 20 rođendan.
